MaMa

Life nurtures and grows within the female body, where two hearts beat in resonance. Mothers give, and children absorb, where tenderness and strength coexist as one.

MaMa, directed and performed by Kirsten Newell and Oxana Banshikova, is a new Bharatanatyam based dance production on the themes of pregnancy and early motherhood. Combining South Asian dance vocabulary with a contemporary sensibility, two dancers explore, compare, and share their journeys as mothers.

MaMa integrates dance with lighting, and a soundscape featuring originally composed music as a contemporary fusion collective that weaves together Celtic and Carnatic sounds. The production evokes the natural world highlighting the close connection between nature and motherhood.
